Quem frenquenta o blog já manja a seção Flashing Pictures, espaço onde eu apresento fotos raras do Suicidal, algumas delas, verdadeiras pérolas que coletei em minhas expedições pela internet.
Verdadeiros tesouros já foram para o ar, mas uma session especial eu guardava para uma edição de gala. Não são fotos “secretas”, já circulam entre os fãs da banda há algum tempo.
Mas acho esses registros tão bons (não por acaso, um deles ilustra o topo do blog) que eles mereciam mais do que alguns comentários. Mereciam e terão.
Há alguns dias encontrei o site do responsável. Ele se chama Ed Arnaud e ainda mora em Tucson, no Arizona, local que abrigou um show do Suicidal em 1982. Apresentação esta que acabou eternizada pelas lentes de Ed.
Abaixo, uma entrevista com ele, as fotos clássicas e, para fechar, mais cinco fotos que vão para o ar pela primeira vez na internet!
Quando e onde você fez as fotos?
As fotos do ST foram tiradas em 23 de janeiro, 1984 no Stumble Inn em Tucson, Arizona.
Como era o cenário? Um clube punk? E o público?
Houve uma série de grandes shows nesse lugar. Era um clube para fãs de música underground. Eles tinham duas ou três televisões e durante todo os shows que eles promoviam passavam o filme “Road Warrior” (Mad Max, para nós brasileiros) nas televisões sem parar. Nas caixas de som, sempre rolava punk rock entre as bandas.
Durante a primeira parte do show, o público estava surpreendemente tranquilo, pelo que eu consigo lembrar. Você consegue ver em algumas fotos as pessoas paradas. Normalmente, o clube tinha um pit furioso à frente do palco. Um mosh pit começou a se formar logo após eu terminar de tirar as minhas fotos. Me lembro de um pequeno público naquela noite, talvez umas 50 pessoas.
No estacionamento fora do clube, alguém pôs um corpo falso em baixo de um carro. Não sei quem, e não sei qual o motivo. Em todo o caso, tirei uma foto.
Uma das coisas que eu não gostava no Stumble Inn, era que ele tinha essa grande em frente ao palco. Isso ficou no caminho para tirar as fotos, e tornou mais difícil a galera saltar do palco. Você viu minha foto do Mike Muir levantando do chão e o público o ajudando a subir? Ele tombou sobre os trilhos na frente do palco e caiu no chão. Foi uma performance muito intensa como todos os fãs do ST sabem.
As fotos foram tiradas em frente do palco, no meio do público, como foi isso?
Normalmente, pode ser muito difícil tirar fotos na frente do palco em um show punk, por conta da movimentação constante. Foi fácil naquela noite. Eu só tinha um filme de 24 exposições em preto e branco, então eu terminei de tirar as fotos no início do show, antes do pogo se formar. Meu amigo músico Paul Young, que era um cara alto, me pôs em seus ombros para o show do ST. Se você observar, algumas das minhas fotos foram tiradas de cima da galera. Paul era um punk rocker que morreu na década de 90, e há essa página em sua homenagem, caso você se interesse.
Naquela época, muitos dos shows do Suicidal ficaram marcados pela violência (brigas ou no pogo). Algum problema naquela noite?
Nenhum problema que eu me lembre.
Por que a escolha por fotos em preto e branco?
Na minha opinião, fotos em preto e branco podem ser mais poderosas para quem vê. É cru e honesto. Às vezes, a cor pode ser perturbadora para o espectador, tirando o foco do assunto.Não há distrações com o preto e branco. Embora eu tenha usado filme colorido para alguns shows, prefiro preto e branco.
Quando eu usei filme colorido, deve ter sido por ser o único filme que eu tinha comigo no momento. Eu não tinha muito dinheiro na época, e às vezes só tinha um filme de 24 poses comigo. Cor definitivamente tem o seu valor. Fotografei o grupo Wall of Voodoo na década de 80. Eles usavam luzes do palco que eram muito profundas em cor, um momento perfeito para usar filme colorido.
O que você acha dessas suas fotos do ST
Eu tenho sorte, fui capaz de documentar o Suicidal no início de sua carreira. Gosto do olhar intenso dos integrantes durante a performance. Eu também gosto do que a banda estava vestindo, incluindo a camisa do Mike Muir. Fiquei muito feliz de estar lá. Eu tinha apenas 19 quando eu tirei essas fotos.
Naquela show, o ST usava bandanas, bonés, chapéus, camisa de flanela, Mike usou uma camiseta da banda. Muito do estilo que ficou consagrado depois. Você acredita que isso também contribuiu para as suas fotos serem tão marcantes?
Sim. O estilo Suicidal fez essas fotos serem únicas. Algo que era muito incomum para uma banda de punk rock na época, pelo menos do que eu tinha visto em Tucson. Tanto quanto eu sei, o estilo cholo não era associado ao punk rock até o Suicidal aparecer na cena. Eu acho que é uma combinação pefeita. Uma coisa é interessante foi que, logo após esse show, grafites do ST começaram a aparecer em torno da cidade. Especialmente, onde skatistas eram freqüentes.
Algumas questões pessoais. Quantos anos você tem? Ainda vive em Tucson? Fale um pouco da sua carreira como fotógrafo.
Acabei de fazer 46 anos e ainda moro em Tucson. Não tenho do que reclamar, continuo saudável. Espero que meus ouvidos aguentem com todos os shows que eu assisti e toda a música que eu toquei alta em minha vida. Enquanto escrevo essas respostas, ouço L7 estourando!
Faço fotos desde que eu tinha 10 anos. Fiz aulas de fotografia durante os quatro anos na escola e em dois anos na faculdade. Fotografar shows começou na faculdade, quando eu trabalhava para uma revista de entretenimento local como fotógrafo freelance.
O primeiro concerto que eu fotografei foi do The Police, em 1982. E continuei a fotografar concertos para a revista, mas o que eu queria era fotografar os shows que eu mais amava, os de Punk Rock. Em meados e final dos anos 80, me tornei o fotógrafo exclusivo para uma banda de rock local chamada Thai Pink. Esta banda tinha um grande potencial como uma banda de glam rock. Sua formação incluiu Eddie Spaghetti, que acabou formando o Supersuckers. Infelizmente, o Thai Pink se separou, a revista local para qual eu fotografava fechou e a cena punk em Tucson não é mais a mesma.
Não sei exatamente o porquê, mas parei de fotografar shows. Voltei a tirar fotos de alguns shows há um ou dois anos e gostaria de continuar. Se alguma banda brasileira aparecer por Tucson, me mande um email que eu faço as fotos.

THE ED’S SHOW
You readers already know about the section Flashing Pictures, which is a place wehre I show you rare Suicidal pictures – in fact, some of those are a real find colected in my expeditions all over the internet.
Some of the treasures has already been posted, but I was keeping a special session for a gala edition. The pics are not ‘secret’, of course, in fact it has been circulating among the fans for a while now.
But I think those shots are so damn good (not at random, one of them it’s on the top of this blog), that they deserve more than only comments. Actually, they deserve and they shall have it.
Some days ago, I’ve found the photographer’s website: his name is Ed Arnaud, and he still lives in Tucson, Arizona, the city where Suicidal made a gig back in 1982. This concert was registred by the lens of Ed’s camera.

When and where those photos were taken?
The photos of ST were taken on 23 January, 1984 at a night club called the “Stumble Inn” in Tucson Arizona.
What was the scenario, a punk club? And how was the audience reacting to the concert?
There were a lot of great shows at this night club. The club catered to fans of underground music. They had two or three televisions in the club and during any show that I attended they would play the movie “Road Warrior” on the televisions over and over again. Their sound system was always playing punk rock music between bands.
During the first part of the show, the audience was suprisingly tame that night from what I can remember. You can see in some of the photos people standing instead of moving. The club usually had a furious pit going right in front of the stage. A mosh pit started forming soon after I finished taking my photos. I remember only a small crowd that night, maybe 50 people.
In the parking lot outside the club, someone put a fake body under a car. I don’t know who, and I don’t know why. I took a photo of it anyway.
One thing I didn’t like about the Stumble Inn, is that they had this railing in front of the stage. This got in the way of taking photos, and made it more difficult for people to dive off the stage. You’ve seen my photo of Mike Muir getting up from the floor and the audience helping him up? He flipped over the railing in front of the stage and landed on the floor. He is a very intense performer as all ST fans know.
The photos were taken in the audience, in front of the stage. How was that?
Usually it can be very diffcult taking photos in front of the stage at a punk show because of the constant movement. It was fairly easy that night. I only had one roll of 24 exposure black and white film, so I finished taking photos early in the show before the pit formed. My musician friend Paul Young, who was a tall guy, let me get on his shoulders for the ST show. If you’ll notice, some of my photos were taken from above the crowd. Paul was a punk rocker who died in the 90’s. Here is a tribute page for him if you’re interested.
Suicidal’s gigs were pretty famous for the violence. Did any problem happened that night?
No problems that I can remember.
Why did you chose b/w photos for that ocasion?
Black and white photos, in my opinion, can be more powerful to the viewer. It’s raw and honest. Sometimes color can be distracting to the viewer taking the focus away from the subject. To me there are no distractions with black and white. Although I have used color film for some concerts, I prefer black and white.
When I have used color film, it may have been the only film I had with me at the time. I didn’t have much money back then, and sometimes only had one roll of 24 exposures with me. Color definetly has it’s place. I photographed Wall of Voodoo in the 80’s. They used stage lights that were very deep in color which made it a perfect time to use color film.
At that concert, the band was wearing bandanas, hats, ST shirts, much of the ornaments that would be lately known as the “suicidal style” or “cholo style”. Do you think that accessories contributed to your photos?
Yes. The Suicidal style made these photos unique. Very unusual for a punk rock band at that time, at least what Tucson had seen. As far as I know, the cholo style was not associated with punk rock until Suicidal showed up on the punk scene. I think it’s a pefect combination. What’s also interesting, soon after this show, ST graffitti started showing up around town. Especially where skaters would frequent.
What do you like in these pictures?
I’m lucky I was able to document a Suicidal show early in their career. I like the intense look on the faces of Suicidal as they perform. I also like what the band was wearing including Mike Muir’s shirt. I was very fortunate to be there. I was only 19 when I took these photos.
How old are you? Where do you live? Tell me about your carrer as photographer?
I just turned 46. So far so good, I’m staying healthy. I hope my ears hold up with all the concerts I’ve attended and all the music I’ve played loud all my life. In fact, I have L7 cranked up as I write this.
I’ve been taking pictures since I was 10. I took photography classes all four years in high school, and two years in college. Photographing concerts started in college when I worked with a local entertainment magazine as a freelance photographer. The first concert that I photographed was The Police in 1982. I continued photographing concerts for the magazine, but I wanted to start photographing the shows I loved most, which was PUNK ROCK. In the mid and late 80’s I became the exclusive photographer for a local rock band called Thai Pink. This band had great potential as a glam rock band. Their lineup included Eddie Spaghetti who eventually formed the Supersuckers. Unfortunately Thai Pink broke up, the local magazine I took photos for stopped publishing, and the punk scene in Tucson wasn’t the same. I don’t know exactly why, but I stopped taking concert photographs.
I’ve taken photos at a few shows in the last year or two, and would like to continue. If any Brazilian bands make it to Tucson, send me an email and I’ll photograph the show.
