Achei o cara no Myspace (bendito seja!) e propus a conversa.

I am from Playa Del Rey. My mother and father lived in Venice and both went to and graduated Venice High School in the 50’s. I spent the first year of my life in Venice, then moved with the family about three miles south, to Playa del Rey, where I lived with my father after my parents split up. My mother stayed at the house in Venice.
E eu aceitei.
Neighborhood Watch played a backyard party at the house in Playa Del Rey and they had a Suicidal/Venice following. I had a band at the time and we opened for Neighborhood Watch at the party. The next day I got a phone call from Mike Muir asking me if I wanted to try out for Suicidal Tendencies. And I said yes.
A nickname DJ Hurricane from the Beastie Boys gave me in the early 90’s. I was never where I was supposed to be. So Cane just said I was awol.
The hat belonged to Louichi’s brother. Louichi can elaborate on that story.
I can’t remember who’s idea it was. The globe does not exist anymore, it has been gone for ten years or so.

I love that Picture. That house is in Playa del Rey, that is the same house where Neighborhood Watch played the backyard party I mentioned earlier. It is my fathers house. The house is still there, and my father, Valor, still lives there. This is the same house where Suicidal Tendencies would practice, and my Father let us use his 1972 4 Door Chevrolet Pick-Up Truck with a camper on it to do the first ever Suicidal Tendencies US Tour, 1983 I think. Pretty sure we were all still just teenagers at the time. I know I was.
The best for me was playing a show with Minor Threat out in the Valley of Los Angeles in the early 80’s. The worst was the violence.
It was just the violence in general as part of the entire scene. It was not just in Venice/Los Angeles, but nation, if not world wide. I just did not really see its necessity and I still don’t. I understand that kids will be kids, and being down with a set is a form of security in numbers when you are coming onto a scene and when everyone is looking at you sideways and wondering where you are from, or who you are down with but is that really what enjoying music is all about? For a lot of kids I am sure, this was, and is a complete deterrent to their local music scene and a turn off in general. For example, why would you want to have to worry about getting beat up if you had plans to go see one of your favorite bands?
Você comandou a bateria no disco de estreia. Como foi a gravação desse álbum clássico?
Nós estávamos fazendo muitos shows na época e praticando bastante.
We were playing a lot of shows at the time and practicing a lot so I think we were pretty sick of each other, that might explain some of the energy. Remember, we are talking about a bunch of teenagers who had not been playing very long at the time and the philosophy was “just get mad at it” it was not going to be perfect, it never was, and we usually played the songs a little different every time, which was great because it gave us a sense of freedom. We practiced in the sequence of the record, so what you hear on the record is the order that we played them and recorded them in the studio. We did not have much money for recording so all of the music was done in one night, no computers, no Pro Tools or Digital Performer or Cubase or Logic or Reason, there were NO edits, it was all played live, all of us in the same room playing together at the same time. I think maybe Mike and Grant went back for overdubs, doubling and solos and mixing the next day ? I remember I had to go to work early in the morning so I was in a hurry to get out of there, making that record was not a priority at the time. We were just some kids making a punk record.
Qual a sua música preferida? Por que?
Subliminal. Basta ouvi-la.
Subliminal. Just listen to it.
Por que você deixou o Suicidal.
Tinha chegado o momento…
It was time…
E ele nunca me respondeu.
A couple of years ago, when Ric Clayton (Suicidal artist extraordinaire) got sick, I sent Mike an email to see if he wanted to do something to help raise some money for Ric. And he never got back to me, so I guess, I dont? Too bad. I am chill with everyone else, Louichi, Grant, Rocky, Mike Clark, Ralph. I see Robert socially from time to time and he is a great person. I have not seen Jon for a while but I hear he is around.
Recentemente, você, Grant Estes e Louichi Mayorga formaram o AgainST.
It was fun, and I am looking forward to doing more.
It was fun for a minute, and then not so fun.
Eu trabalhei para Rage Against the Machine, One Day As A Lion, Queens of the Stone Age, Jimmy Eat World, The Mars Volta, Green Day e alguns oturos…
I am 45 years old. I am pretty sure that when I was in the band that I the youngest of the ST. And the only member of the band who actually actively rode a skateboard. Besides making music when time allows, I work with touring groups as a drum tech. Sometimes I work as a production manager. I have worked with Rage Against the Machine, One Day As A Lion, Queens of the Stone Age, Jimmy Eat World, The Mars Volta, Green Day and some others…
Continua andando de skate?
Sim, continuo!
Yeah, I still skate. But I am old and I am American so I do not have health insurance and I need to be careful. I am no good, no vert or anything like that, but I love it. And yeah, there were a lot of skaters around at the time, it was a transitional period for skaters, the Skateparks were closing down and street skating and backyard pools and ramps were in in vogue. There was a quarter pipe in the alley near my fathers joint in Playa del Rey, it was just in an alley, not on anybody’s property so there were people skating it all the time, Jay Adams was around, Tony Alva, Christian Hosoi and a couple of the second wave Dog Town riders, Scott Oster and Aaron Murray really talented riders and good people, It was indeed part of the lifestyle.
